Hello world!

Like every first exercise when you’re learning a new programming language, so should every first blog post have a “Hello world!” The purpose of this blog is to hopefully provide you with a view of my personal journey as I make one of the biggest transitions in my life: abandoning the comfort of a promising career in law and diversity to pursue my passion for tech in the Wild Wild West of the Portland software community.

As a snapshot of who I am, I’m a 32-year-old, newly-minted software engineer here in Portland.  I’m also a former lawyer and diversity professional, a current single father of an awesome eight-year-old Oregonian, and an 11-year transplant by way of the Aloha State.  Growing up, I’ve always had a deep and abiding love for science and tech, from that old 75 megahertz computer and classic NES I had as a child to the tablet and PS4 I have today.  I’m excited to use my growing skill set in C#, Python, JavaScript, and other languages to explore my love of contextualizing big data to allow us, as individuals, to both glean insights from information and to stimulate creativity from it.

I hope that future blog posts will include some of the interesting similarities and connections I’ve found between my former profession and my new one, as well feature software projects that I’m excited about and are a reflection of my life experiences and values!  Feel free to subscribe and check in from time to time to see what I’m doing in this crazy little corner of the Pacific Northwest!
